There is a total arrest of 25 people so far while Caption Amarinder Singh warned of taking strict actions if anyone involved in the case. So far, seven excise officials and six policemen have been suspended.

The hooch tragedy is the natural and direct consequence of the patronage that is given to the Congress leaders including the ministers and the MLA’s for freely carrying out rampant illegal liquor trade in the state and it is a murder, simple, and pure. In response to Mr. Badal, the CM asked him, not to “politicise the tragedy”, saying that this incident had happened under Akali Dal BJP regime too, listing the tragedies of 2012 and 2016 in Gurdaspur and Batala. Several lives were lost in those cases also and no FIR was registered in Batala incident and no actions were taken against the accused ones.

Sixty-three deaths were reported from Tarn Taran district, 11 in Gurudaspur’s Batala, and 12 in Amritsar since Wednesday, the officials said.
The first death was reported in Muchhal (Amritsar) village on Wednesday evening. Then 38 people died, according to the officials, by Friday night. By Saturday night, the count rose to 48 deaths during the day.

Officials in Chandigarh are still not able to say, how many people were still admitted in the hospital after drinking the illegal liquor. The police have done several raids to catch the culprits. After 8 arrests, they caught 17 more people covering upto 100 raids in the three districts. The raiding officials have seized large quantities of “lahan”- the raw material for making various types of liquor from various dhabas around Shambhu Border, Rajpura, and Patiala, DGP Dinkar Gupta said.
