HYDERABAD – Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) reclaimed the number one spot in the IPL 2026 points table on Wednesday night, securing a clinical 33-run victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. In a high-octane encounter that saw over 430 runs scored, SRH’s superior batting depth and a disciplined bowling performance by Pat Cummins proved to be the difference.

SRH Setting the Tone: A Batting Masterclass
Opting to bat first, the Sunrisers lineup unleashed a relentless assault on the Punjab bowlers from the very first ball. The opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a blistering start, with Sharma smashing 35 off just 13 deliveries and Head adding a quick-fire 38 off 19. This aggressive foundation allowed the middle order to flourish.
Ishan Kishan kept the momentum alive with a rapid 55 off 32 balls, but it was Heinrich Klaasen who anchored the backend of the innings. Klaasen top-scored with a powerful 69 off 43 balls, featuring four massive sixes. A late cameo by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who struck 29 off 13, propelled the Sunrisers to a formidable total of 235/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
The Chase: Cooper Connolly’s Lone Warrior Act
The Punjab Kings’ pursuit of 236 got off to a disastrous start as SRH captain Pat Cummins struck early to remove opener Priyansh Arya for just 1 run. When Shreyas Iyer fell shortly after for 5, the Kings were reeling. However, what followed was one of the most remarkable individual performances of the season.
Australian youngster Cooper Connolly played a magnificent lone warrior knock, keeping the Kings in the hunt long after the required run rate had climbed. Connolly registered his maiden IPL century, finishing unbeaten on 107* off 59 balls, an innings highlighted by 7 fours and 8 sixes. Despite his brilliance, he found little support from the other end; Marcus Stoinis (28) and Suryansh Shedge (25) were the only other batters to provide minor resistance as the Kings finished at 202/7.
