The EU’s denied in accepting India-made vaccine for its “Vaccination report” has also prompted New
Delhi to come up with a policy.
With the European Union (EU) forming an EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate framework to regulate free
movement from July 1. India has asked to accept Covid-19 vaccine authorized by the World health
organization (WHO) or national authority, such as Covishield and Covaxin for Indians traveling to
Europe, sources said on Wednesday.
The EU’s denied in accepting India-made vaccine for its “vaccination passport” has also advised New
Delhi to come up with a new policy.
Sources said: India will begin a new policy when it comes to relaxation from Quarantine. This would
mean that unless the EU permits Covishield and Covaxin certificates, their certificates will be
rejected here, and people from EU has to go through mandatory quarantine before landing in India.
A source said “We have noted that EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate framework, to facilitate free
movement during the pandemic, is to come into effect from July 1. Under this framework, persons
vaccinated with vaccines authorized by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) will be exempted from
travel restrictions within the EU. Individual member-state have the flexibility to also accept vaccines that
have been authorized at the national level or by the WHO”.
Sources said Indian officials have requested EU member-nation to individually consider imposing a
similar exemption to those who have taken Covishield and Covaxin in India and accept the
vaccination certificate issued through the CoWIN portal, the sources said.
“We have also conveyed to EU member-states that India will institute a reciprocal policy for
recognition od the EU Digital Covid-19 certificate framework”. The sources said. “Upon notification
of Covishield and Covaxin for inclusion in EU Digital Covid-19 certificate and recognition of Indian
CoWIN vaccination certificate, Indian health authorities would exempt the EU member-state
concerned for exemption from mandatory quarantine of all those carrying EU Digital Covid-19
Certificate.
