Heavy rainfall set off landslides in Mumbai’s Chembur, 11 died as the wall collapsed

According to reports, at least 11 people died after a wall collapsed on some shanties in Chembur’s Bharat Nagar area in Mumbai due to a landslide caused on Sunday (July 18, 2021). The National disaster Response Force (NDRF) official revealed that the rescue operation for the people trapped are underway. Till now 16 people are rescued from the remains of the wall collapse in Chembur, said Mumbai’s fire brigade team.

Officials has stated that the death toll may increase as several people are yet to be rescued under the remains of collapsed wall.

In another incident, seven people died and two were heavily injure after a house wall collapsed at Vashi Naka in Mumbai’s Mahul area. A fire official revealed that a retaining wall collapsed at 1 am after a tree fell on it.

Besides that, in Mumbai’s Vikhroli suburb three hutment dwellers were killed as five shacks collapsed at 2:30 am after a landslides following heavy overnight rains, a civic official said. Two person were heavily injured and were sent to the nearby hospital, he said.

Following enormous rains in Maharashtra’s Mumbai on Sunday, several parts of the city reported drenching. The reports also stated that the rainwater even started entering houses located in Hanuman Nagar, Kandivali East area of the Mumbai railway tracks were also drenched by water after continuous heavy rainfall in the area.

“17 trains short terminated/regulated as ‘very heavy rainfall’ causes waterlogging on the railway tracks at multiple locations in Mumbai and suburban areas. All pumps are working at waterlogged areas” said Western Railway on Sunday morning.

IMD has also issued an Orange alert for Mumbai On Saturday and predicted an outburst of heavy rainfall in the city for the next 24 hours.
