Mumbai, India – Mumbai police have arrested a 51-year-old man from Noida for sending a hoax terror threat that put the city on high alert. The accused, identified as Ashwani Kumar, an astrologer and Vastu expert, reportedly confessed that his motive was personal revenge against a former friend.
The threatening WhatsApp message, sent to the Mumbai traffic police’s helpline on Thursday, claimed that “14 terrorists had entered the city with 400 kg of RDX” and had planted “human bombs” in 34 vehicles. The message, sent just days before the large-scale Anant Chaturdashi celebrations, prompted a city-wide security alert and deployment of over 21,000 police personnel.
A Swift Investigation and Arrest
Upon receiving the threat, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch immediately launched an investigation. The mobile number used to send the message was swiftly traced to a location in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. A team was dispatched to Noida, and with the help of local police, they arrested Ashwani Kumar from his residence in Sector 79. He has since been handed over to the Mumbai Police and will be produced before a court.
Motive: A Friend Turned Foe
During interrogation, Kumar revealed a startling motive. He admitted to sending the hoax message to settle a score with a former friend who had filed a fraud case against him in Patna in 2023, which resulted in Kumar spending three months in jail. To get revenge, he allegedly used his friend’s name to send the threat and frame him.
No Need to Panic
While security at key locations remains heightened, officials have stressed that there is “no need to panic.” They have urged citizens not to believe in rumors and to report any suspicious activity. The swift police action in arresting the accused and confirming the threat as a hoax has been praised for preventing widespread public alarm during the ongoing Ganesh festival. A case has been registered at Worli police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
