Kolkata: Nearly thousand villagers including children blocked the road at Domkal in Murshidabad District, West Bengal complaining about the hunger from last 25 days due to COVID-19 lockdown. This protest awoke after a day when the hundreds of migrants spilled on the street of Bandra in Mumbai, protesting about the lack of food and also demanding to sent back to the home-town.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee promised some money for the Bengali Migrants who has stranded outside the state for their petty expenses. The road blocking in Domkal began at 10:30 AM and continued for 5 hours before the police came into action to disperse the crowd.
We talked to one of the protestors “Mehrana Bibi” said that they have no work, no rice, no daal, no money and they are boiling leaves feeding their children and they are crying. Another protestor from the crowd “Subho Das” said that the govt. had promised for free ration but they are not getting any single ration from the ration shops. These protestors belong to ward no 10 of the Domkal Municipality, 240 Kms North of Kolkata.
The Govt. of Bengal has promised to give free ration, including 5 kilos of rice and wheat to all the ration card holders till the month of September.
“I am deeply ashamed that our people have to sit on the streets demanding for food. I am going to plan and organize supplies for them. But firstly we have to find out that why these ration shops are not delivering the ration and basics to them”, Chairman of the Domkal Municipality Rafiqul Islam said.
Mamta Banerjee said that about the Mumbai incident that non is responsible either the Central Govt. or the State Govt., but the one who has spread the fake news that the transport will start from 14th of this month. She added that “we can’t transfer money, but will definitely contact the locals of the state to give some pocket to the migrants to bare the expenses.”
