As a distinct low-pressure area over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea is all set to develop into a cyclonic storm along the west coast in the next 36 hours, red alert of extremely heavy rainfall for the three districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta has been declared for Friday.
Also, an orange alert of very heavy rainfall of 11-20 cm has been declared for nine districts including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idduki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. The weather department and Kerala state disaster management have asked public to stay out of the coast.
The weather will be stormy with heavy wind speed of 40 Kmph is likely in some places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idduki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Mallappuram district in Kerala and over Lakshadweep area.
Fisherman have been warned to stay away from the coast due to alerts issued and can cause primary damages if ignored.
The IMD informed that a distinct low-pressure area over the Lakshadweep area & adjoining southeast Arabian Sea persists. Associated cyclonic circulation is pushing up to mid tropospheric levels, it is very likely to mix up into a depression over the same region during the next 12 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during another 24 hours. It is very likely to intensify further and move north north-westwards towards Gujarat & adjoining Pakistan coasts. The cyclonic storm is likely to reach Gujarat coasts around May 18 evening.
