In a massive high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs, handing the hosts their third consecutive loss of the season. Despite a late blitz from Sherfane Rutherford, Mumbai fell short of the humongous 241-run target set by a dominant RCB top-order.

Invited to bat first, RCB’s top three batsmen were in devastating form, each crossing the 50-run mark to propel the team to a staggering 240/3 in 20 overs. The opening pair of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli took the MI bowlers to the cleaners from the get-go. Salt smashed 78 runs, including three consecutive sixes off Mitchell Santner in the 5th over. Kohli provided steady support with a classic 50, even starting the innings with a six in the very first over. Rajat Patidar continued the momentum with a quick-fire 53, while Tim David provided the finishing touch with 34 runs off just 16 balls.

Mumbai’s bowlers struggled throughout the innings on a batting-friendly Wankhede pitch. Shardul Thakur remained the leading wicket-taker of the season for MI, but the unit failed to contain the run flow. Chasing 241, Mumbai Indians had a promising start with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton putting on a 57-run opening stand. However, the chase derailed due to a thigh strain to Rohit Sharma, who was forced to retire hurt for 19, and frequent wickets in the middle overs.

Suryakumar Yadav (33) and Captain Hardik Pandya (40 off 22) kept MI in the hunt, but Suyash Sharma’s brilliant spell broke the back of the chase, dismissing Rickelton (37) and Tilak Varma (1) in a single over. Coming in at the death, Sherfane Rutherford kept MI’s hopes alive with a breathtaking 71* off 31 balls, featuring 9 massive sixes. He smashed four sixes in the final over, but the requirement was too steep, and Mumbai finished at 222/7.

Before the start of the match, the stadium observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92. All players wore black armbands as a mark of respect, and her songs were played throughout the ground as a final farewell to the Queen of Melody.
